Day 1: Delhi (L, D)Your tour begins on the first day of Diwali, known as Dhanteras, with pickup at your hotel or the Delhi International Airport. Your driver transfers you by private, air-conditioned vehicle to your accommodation to check in. After lunch at a local restaurant, your guide takes you on a private, half-day sightseeing tour of some of the city’s top cultural landmarks.
On the drive to Old Delhi, your guide will point out Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi's main strip. The lively square is home to funky bazaars and various places of worship such as Jama Masjid, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib of the Sikhs, the Gauri Shankar Temple, the Central Baptist church, and the Digambar Jain temple.
When you reach the Red Fort, built by Shah Jahan to overlook Delhi, get out to explore the expansive red sandstone complex with your guide. Afterward, travel to Raj Ghat, a memorial built to honor the site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated.
Next, visit India’s highest minaret, Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage site constructed with red marble and sandstone. See its inscriptions with verses from the Qur’an, and then stop at UNESCO-listed Humayun’s Tomb, the burial place of the 16th-century Mughal emperor.
Hop back in your private vehicle and drive along Rajpath (King's Way), passing under India Gate, a tall stone archway built as a memorial to Indian soldiers who died in World War I. Take this official boulevard toward the Indian presidential state of Rashtrapati Bhavan as your guide shares interesting commentary along the way.
Enjoy dinner at your hotel and an evening at your leisure.
Overnight: 4- or 5-star hotel in Delhi
Day 2: Delhi Agra (B, L, D)
Following breakfast at your hotel, your guide takes you on a 4-hour drive by private vehicle to check in at the hotel in your next city, Agra. After you’ve settled in, enjoy lunch in a restaurant and then head out for more sightseeing in the afternoon, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Taj Mahal, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The impressive mid-17th century structure, constructed of white marble, is considered one of the most extravagant monuments ever built for love. Commissioned by Shah Jahan as a memorial to his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the domed mausoleum took 20 years to complete. Listen as your guide discusses this exemplar of Mughal architecture ─ a style borrowed from many traditions including Islamic, Turkish and Indian ─ and shares knowledge about its Persian designer.
Afterward, learn about the intricate design of the 16th-century Agra Fort, which combines both Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. Built by Emperor Akbar on the banks of the Yamuna River, the fort is constructed of red sandstone. Walk around the complex to see the beautifully designed rooms like the Diwan-I-Am (public audience hall) and the Diwan-I-Khas (private audience hall), added by Shah Jahan.
Your Agra tour continues to the Tomb of Itimad-ud-daulah, built between 1622 and 1628 by Empress Nur Jahan for her father. The mausoleum, situated on the opposite bank of the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal, is more commonly known as the Baby Taj. Admire the trelliswork and precious stone inlay as you learn about the Persian influences on the jewel box like design; it was the first tomb in India made entirely of marble.
On this second festival day, referred to as Roop Chaturdashi, or Small Diwali, people decorate their homes with clay lamps known as diyas. Witness a sea of activity at a local market, where shoppers find gift items, sweets, firecrackers and candles as well as idols of gods and goddesses. You'll notice how locals offer prayers in their workplace for prosperity and the growth of their businesses.
In the evening, enjoy a delicious Indian meal for a celebratory dinner.
Overnight: 4- or 5-star hotel in Agra
Day 3: Agra Jaipur (B, L, D)
Today is the highlight of the Diwali festival, signifying when Lord Rama returned home after defeating the demon king Ravana, a day when good triumphed over evil. Since the date of his return coincided with a moonless night, the residents illuminated the village to welcome him, his consort Sita and his brother Lakshmana.
Relax during an approximate 5-hour drive to Jaipur after breakfast, stopping along the way at the red sandstone compound of Fatehpur Sikri. This UNESCO World Heritage site, built in 1569 by Emperor Akbar, was abandoned 15 years later due to water scarcity. Your guide shares enlightened facts about the Hindu and Muslim architectural styles as you walk within the walled complex, visiting Jama Masjid, Tomb of Salim Chishti Chisti, and Panch Mahal, among other buildings.
Arrive in Jaipur and check in to your hotel before heading out to a local restaurant lunch. Here, families gather together for Lakshmi puja, a prayer to Goddess Lakshmi, followed by mouthwatering feasts and firework festivities. In the afternoon, enjoy a traditional welcome at the home of a local family. Enjoy chai tea and light Indian snacks as you learn about the festival’s history and associated events.
You can opt to attend prayers for about 20 minutes at the home or a nearby temple or home, or watch from a distance if you don’t want to remove your footwear. After watch as intricate designs called rangoli are created on the floor with powdered colors and sand. Females can have their palms decorated with henna in traditional Indian design patterns (see Important Info for more details).
In the evening, watch Jaipur’s skyline light up with a breathtaking fireworks display, and join the celebration as locals spark firecrackers in the streets. At a local home, take part in an authentic Indian feast with a selection of dishes accompanied by rice, Indian bread, salad, curd and pickle followed by Indian desserts. (Please note: Many families prefer a vegetarian-only meal on Diwali.)
Overnight: 4- or 5-star hotel in Jaipur
Day 4: Jaipur (B, L, D)
Start your day with a guided exploration of Amber Fort after breakfast. Ride in a jeep up to Amber Fort. When you reach the 16th-century hilltop palace, explore on foot and admire breathtaking views of Maota Lake. Learn about the palace’s ornate design and Rajput architectural elements from your guide during this private tour of the fortress.
After lunch, enjoy an afternoon city tour of bustling Jaipur, a metropolis whose origins can be traced back to the reign of Jai Singh II in the 18th century. Note the pink plastered stone that gives Jaipur its popular name of ‘Pink City,’ as you tour Jaipur’s top attractions accompanied by your guide.
Since today is the first day of the New Year, you’ll see locals involved in rituals and prayers to mark the occasion.
It's also a day for artists, mechanics, and other working people to honor the Hindu god, Vishwakarma. People worship the tools that bring them work by cleaning them, and offer prayers to the divine engineer. Your guide accompanies you to a workshop to witness workers as they offer these blessings.
Next visit the beautiful Hawa Mahal, called the Palace of the Winds, built to resemble the crown of the Hindu god, Krishna. Then view the stargazing observatory of Jantar Mantar, built by the renowned astronomer named Maharaja Jai Singh.
Afterward, enjoy dinner and a visit to a Krishna temple to learn about Govardhan Puja, also called Annakut (meaning a heap of grain), celebrated today as the time Lord Krishna defeated the rain god Indra. Legend goes that Lord Krishna lifted Mt Govardhan with one finger to save the people from Indra's wrath. Traditionally, people build small hillocks, decorate them with flowers and worship them. Expect to see mounds of food on them, too. Vegetarian food offerings are arranged in tiers or steps and later distributed among devotees in the evening.
Overnight: 4- or 5-star hotel in Jaipur
Day 5: Jaipur Mandawa: Bhai Dooj (B, L, D)
After breakfast at your hotel, embark on an approximate 4-hour drive to Mandawa, a busy market town fortified in the 18th century by wealthy merchant families of Rajasthan. These businessmen constructed many havelis and commissioned artists to paint the building walls with their elaborate designs.
After you check into your hotel, you’re taken to the home of another local family to witness the festivities of Bhai Dooj. On this final day of Diwali, brothers visit their married sisters who welcome them with love and a lavish meal that often includes their favorite dishes. Sisters perform tika (a ceremonial application of saffron paste on the forehead) and give gifts to their brothers. In return, brothers bless their sisters and treat them to gifts or sagan (cash).
After this celebration and a lunch break, embark on a half-day sightseeing tour, visiting havelis that reflect the cultural splendor of this bygone era. At mansions like Jhunjhunwala Haveli and Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli, learn about what happened to these architectural wonders after their owners abandoned them to obscurity.
Then, head to 18th-century Mandawa Fort, and enjoy a sense of discovery at every turn. See battlements with spectacular views of the town below, and imagine the marauding bandits that once roamed freely. At the palace, you’ll find antique murals, a marble fountain, a whimsical weather vane in the design of a peacock, and an arched window that overlooks a lush garden visited by the showy birds.
Following your sightseeing, relax in the evening after your hotel dinner is served.
Overnight: 4- or 5-star hotel in Mandawa
Day 6: Mandawa Delhi (B)
After breakfast at your hotel, you’re taken back to Delhi (an approximately 6-hour drive) and directly transferred to your hotel or the airport to board your flight for your onward destination.
