產品詳情

Travelers flock to Amsterdam for legal (or quasi-legal) activities they can’t do elsewhere ─ namely, smoking marijuana and prostitution. But how did the city come to tolerate these two things? This enlightening 3-hour guided tour has answers. Meet your guide in central Amsterdam and prepare to explore the city’s legendary tolerance, which extends well beyond these two activities.

See the statue of Anne Frank, still one of the city’s most famous residents. In the 17th century, Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition flocked to the city, a haven where their religion was accepted. Not far away is the Homomonument, three large pink triangles that make up one larger triangle, dedicated to the city’s past, present and future gay denizens. The monument was installed in 1987. See a hidden Catholic church in the attic of a building, used to worship in secret about two centuries ago, when Catholicism was not particularly popular in Amsterdam.

From there, zigzag through the city, walking along the canals and the narrow cobblestone streets, until you reach the Red Light District. A neighborhood where prostitution is not only tolerated but completely legal, the Red Light District is a sight to be seen. The guide will explain how the system works and the history of how prostitution became legal here.

A tour on tolerance in Amsterdam would not be complete without a stop at one of the city’s coffee shops, which focus more on marijuana than coffee. Learn how pot came to be quasi-legal in Holland and the struggles marijuana advocates have had to try to maintain that status. Visit the Hemp Museum where you can learn about the history of the crop and its many uses. The tour concludes in central Amsterdam, leaving you free to continue to explore on your own.
