Meet your guide in San Sebasti□n and hop aboard a public bus to Hondarribia, a seaside town just less than half an hour away. Quieter than San Sebasti□n, yet with history and beauty in equal measures, the town is relatively undiscovered and is a great place to experience the local life and culture of Spain’s famous Basque region.
On arrival, set off on an evening walking tour around the streets and see the old city walls that date back to Roman times as well as the Castle of Charles V ─ a medieval fortress that served as both a castle and palace. Stop for photos and hear about the town’s turbulent past; given Hondarribia’s location on the border between Spain and France, it was a strategically important stronghold during the Middle Ages and was besieged several times.
Stroll down to Front□n Jostaldi, one of the most popular sports venues in the area. The Basque sport Jai-Alai is played at the site, so use your visit to meet some of Hondarribia’s players and learn about the ball game itself. Hear how different baskets and balls are used, and learn how the ball speeds can reach up to a lightning-fast 186 miles (300 kilometers) per hour. If you want to try playing, you can get involved!
Then, take a seat to watch the players compete in a fast-paced game and soak up the atmosphere in the arena. After the match finishes, stroll to a nearby cafe to enjoy a small dish of paella, made in traditional Basque style with seafood, chicken and long-grain rice. Sip on a glass of txakoli, the refreshing local white wine, and note how the lightness of its flavor complements the paella perfectly.
Having enjoyed an introduction to the Basque region’s food, sport and culture, finish your late evening tour by returning with your guide to San Sebasti□n by public bus.
