Day 1: Procida Ischia
Your 6-night sailing adventure starts with a welcome meeting on the island of Procida the smallest and oldest island in the Bay of Naples. Then, walk to the port, board your boat and cruise to the nearby island of Ischia. The largest of Italy’s Phlegran island archipelago, Ischia couldn’t be more different to Procida with wide open stretches of forestland, handsome spa towns and crumbling ruins all around. After docking, head out with your guide to visit Castello Aragonese, a sprawling fortress complex that comprises a castle, cathedral and crypt. Built in the 15th century, the fortress was once used to protect the island from pirates.
Spend the rest of your afternoon exploring the island independently. Perhaps head to Le Fumarole Beach, and bask on its warm and dry sands heated from a volcanic basin lying underneath the bay. Visit a local restaurant for dinner (own expense), and then return back to your boat at the pre-arranged time.
Overnight: boat docked in Ischia
Day 2: Ischia Sorrento Pompeii Sorrento (B, L)
Enjoy breakfast on your boat as you cruise away from Ischia to the town of Sorrento, near Italy’s Amalfi Coast. After docking at Sorrento port, either stay in Sorrento and spend a day at leisure or head out on an optional excursion to Pompeii the ancient city that lay buried for centuries following Mount Vesuvius’ AD 79 eruption.
Head inside the city’s UNESCO-listed archeological site (entrance own expense), and explore the site at leisure, seeing exquisitely preserved temples to the ancient gods, as well as frescoes, Roman baths, an amphitheater and, even, an ancient brothel! Return back to your minibus at the pre-arranged time and travel back to Sorrento. Spend the rest of your day at leisure.
Overnight: boat docked in Sorrento
Day 3: Sorrento Naples Sorrento (B, L)
After breakfast, make your own way to Sorrento Station and hop aboard your train to the city of Naples capital of Italy’s Campania region. Once there, how you spend your day is up to you. Perhaps visit Naples’ UNESCO-listed centro storico (historical center) and discover streets that date back to the times of the Ancient Greeks like the bustling Spaccanapoli. If you’re in the mood for shopping, check out Via Toledo, or take in some of Naples’ top attractions like Piazza del Plebiscito a square that’s home to a cluster of ornate Bourbon palaces.
Alternatively, pay homage to the humble pizza and perhaps pay a visit to Da Michele pizzeria, a place that gained cult status after featuring in the 2010 film Eat, Pray, Love featuring Julia Roberts. Return to Naples at a time that suits you, and spend your evening in Sorrento doing whatever you please.
Overnight: boat docked in Sorrento
Day 4: Sorrento Amalfi (B, L)
Cruise south away from Sorrento as you eat breakfast on board your boat, heading to the town of Amalfi on the breathtakingly beautiful Amalfi Coast. After docking, head out to enjoy the unspoiled scenery as you see fit. Perhaps take a walk along the narrow cliff-top trails and soak up the views over the sea, or explore the town and discover monuments like the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea with its distinctive stripy fa ade. In the evening, check out the cluster of bars that throng Amalfi’s squares and dine at one of the many restaurants that line the seafront.
Overnight: boat docked in Amalfi
Day 5: Amalfi Capri (B, L)
Leave the Amalfi Coast after breakfast and cruise northwest to the glamorous island of Capri. After docking at Marina Grande, the island’s ever-busy port, enjoy a full day of free time to see the sights at your own pace. Relax on one of the island’s pretty pebble beaches like Marina Piccola, or take a boat ride (own expense) to see the mystical Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) a sea cave that’s illuminated by sunlight entering through cracks below the surface of the water.
Your boat stays docked in Capri overnight, so make the most of the chance to enjoy the island’s nightlife after the day-trippers have left. Head for the island’s super chic bars to mingle with the hoi polloi, or try some of the fresh local seafood in a Capri town restaurant (own expense).
Overnight: boat docked in Capri
Day 6: Capri Procida (B, L)
Start your day with breakfast on board, and then cruise away from Capri across the Bay of Naples to Procida. Relax in the sun on one of Procida’s beaches or swim in the azure sea from the side of the boat. Alternatively, sightsee independently, looking out for the filming locations used in movies like Il Positano: The Postman and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
For the best views, take a walk up to Castello d’Avalos, a 16th-century fortress, and look out over the colorful Marina Corricella. The Benedictine Abbey of Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo is also well worth a visit (entrance own expense).
Overnight: boat docked in Procida
Day 7: Procida (B)
After a final breakfast, bid your host and fellow group members a fond farewell. Leave your boat and finish your 6-night tour in Procida.
