After early morning hotel pickup in Palenque, it's a 3.5-hour drive to the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. Upon reaching Las Guacamayas, you will have the opportunity to seehow thelocal inhabitants─made up of about 40 families indigenous to neighboring Oaxaca ─ haveworked to preservethe endangered red guacamayas, orscarlet macaws.
Located on the banks of the Lacant□n River and part of the municipality of Marqu□s de Comillas, Chiapas, the entirerural community has made strategic alliances in theconservation of ecological systems for the future. Learn from your guide about their initiatives to help in the continued survivalof these birds.
You will have about 45 minutes to eata providedregional breakfast before a motorboat tour on the Lacant□n River. During the ride, admire the flora and fauna in their natural habitat, includingmacaws and other animalspecies such ashowler monkeys, white-tailed deer, toucans, and white falcons, among others.
After roughly2.5 hours, a stop is made to observe artificial nests constructed withfallen trees to conserve the macaws. At the end of yourvisit, you will have time forlunch (own expense) before the driveback to Palenque and drop-off at your hotel.
