With a history expanding from the Neolithic period, when the first settlement of the city was founded just steps from the Venetian harbour, Chania has seen Romans, Byzantine officials, Arabs, Venetians, Ottomans, and Germans pass through her city streets. Due to its strategic geographical position, Crete has always had to struggle for independence, but this ever-changing history makes for a fascinating story!
Discover what makes Crete’s cultural capital so magical on this relaxed full-day walking tour of Chania. You’ll take in the sites from the Old Town to the lesser known Ottoman and Jewish quarters, and into the chic historic neighbourhood of Halepa. Get ready to experience Chania with all your senses!
We’ll start your Chania tour at the Dimotiki Agora (Municipal Market), which marks the border between the old and new town. Built between 1908 and 1913 (the year that Crete was united with Greece), the Agora hosts more than 70 shops selling mostly regional products. You’ll get to explore the market and sample local delicacies while learning about the deliciously healthy Cretan diet.
With your taste buds satisfied, we will walk to the old town district. Wander through narrow laneways, hidden backstreets, and open doors to secret gardens, and Venetian and Ottoman monuments. Listen to stories of empires, sailors, traders, lovers, heroes, and artists. Learn how this city has been a crossroads between the East and West for centuries.
Next on your Chania tour, you’ll have the unique opportunity to see local artisans crafting their products. Listen to their stories ─ and maybe even try your own skills!
From there, our Crete tour will take us on a stroll through the Jewish and Ottoman neighbourhoods, where you’ll learn how life has changed over the years in this city of multicultural residents.
Finally, we’ll walk along the waterfront of one of Chania’s historical neighbourhoods and sit down to an inviting table with Cretan mezedes (local dishes).
Your Crete tour will end either here or we could take you back to the starting point. With so many suggestions and tips from your local guide, you’ll likely have a myriad of things you’ll want to do next!

Our guide was Yiannis, a Chania native, and he was excellent! Thorough knowledge of the history of Chania, great places to eat. We DID NOT want to have lunch after this tour was over! We were full! Went to the beach Yiannis recommended and just chilled for the rest of the day. Start of a very relaxing few days in Crete. Felt I was really understanding Cretan culture with Yiannis.Would just suggest you leave plenty of time to find the meeting place in front of the Chania public market. This is an obvious place if you live in Chania, but if you don't, best to plot it out on a map the night before, and/or have hotel clerk help pin point it. We were late for tour because we got a little lost. It is about 4 or 5 blocks inland from the harbor. Crete has a way of making you immediately want to start sleeping late!

Ionnas aka John was the greatest tour guide of our 15 day trip through the Mediterranean. We'd give it more stars if possible. He was passionate about his city and shared his love to the 3 people on our tour. We got more than our money's worth from the first stop inside the Chania Municipal Market to the last sampling Raki in the local's gathering spot outside the church. This is a must do tour!

Giannis has been a great guide! As the date suitable for me was before the start of the season I was the only person who enrolled for this tour and I was so happy the tour has not been cancelled as it has happened to me in other places. The tour shows the history and the development of a beautiful and old city as Chania in a very interesting, pleasant and delicious way. The route is wisely made with stops at the most proper moments. I enjoyed every single moment of it and felt as if friends are showing me the city! Highly recommendable!

We had a WONDERFUL tour. It was slow-paced, but in a good way... we got a tour of the big history and the little details from a very very nice and knowledgeable local, John, who clearly loves his city. Our tour was enhanced by two couples who were already friends from Turkey and another lovely tour guide from Rethymnon who took her day off to better know Chania. By the end of this wonderful tour, we sat down for Raki and Mezedes, and ended up staying and all talking far longer than initially planned. This tour has colored our entire opinion of Chania in the best possible way.

He shared so much history of Chania and Greece with us so the we had a good understanding of the background of what we were seeing. Introducing us to local beverages and foods was wonderful. He was able to give us some great suggestions of what we should see and do with the rest of our time on Crete. The pace was pleasant and I would highly recommend this tour.
