In the morning, make your way by public bus or taxi (own expense) to Phrao, located approximately 45 miles (75 km) from Chiang Mai. In this agricultural jewel, situated in a picturesque valley surrounded by rolling hills, you'll work with two nonprofit charitable organizations that ensure local people have access to basic services and equal opportunities to build better lives.
Upon arrival, meet a representative of the Give A Day Global organization, and receive an introduction to the local community projects it oversees. During your orientation, meet with staff or volunteers to learn about the issues facing their community and discover how the organizations Give A Day Global and Warm Heart Worldwide work together to improve community members access to education and health care, and focus on environmental restoration for future generations.
Get ready to engage in hands-on activities. Your volunteer contribution may vary, based on the organization's greatest needs on any given day.
Possible projects include assisting with biochar production (organic material that improves soil), agricultural labor, construction, micro-enterprise, health projects, or educational or recreational activities with the residents of the Children’s Home. Enjoy playing soccer or badminton; help out on cooking or art projects; or assist students with homework help. (Note: The latter volunteer activities are available only when the children are not in school.)
You'll spend some 4.5 hours completing work on your project, pausing midday for a 1-hour lunch (you can bring your own or you may purchase food at an on-site restaurant). Later in the evening after your day is done, return by taxi or public bus to Chiang Mai.
