Day 1 Our first day takes you from Bangkok to Khao Laem National Park in the northwest of central Thailand. From your hotel, you travel roughly 350 km deep into the heart of Thailand. On the way, an English-speaking guide introduces you to the history and culture of Kanchanaburi - Thailand's largest central province. After a delicious Thai lunch, a visit to the world-famous River Kwai Bridge as well as the close-by Death Railway Museum and War Memorial Cemetery takes you back to a dark chapter of world history. Later, you visit a local waterfall before completing the final stretch of the drive. Finally, you arrive at the Lake Safari Thailand raft house and embark on an unforgettable journey towards Sangklaburi.
Day 2 As the day breaks, the Lake Safari Thailand houseboat is pulled further into the national park. After breakfast, you leave for Coconut Island - a plantation of coconut palms where a special breed of the fruit is cultivated. Here, you taste of the island's prized crop and catch a first glimpse of the breath-taking scenery Khao Laem National Park has to offer, along with a close-up impression of how the locals make a living. You spend the remainder of the day on the houseboat. Far from mobile phones and internet connections, you take a refreshing dip in the lake, get comfortable with a good book or just doze off in a hammock.
Day 3 Coming down for breakfast, you spot the pointed roof of a golden chedi pierce the horizon as the Lake Safari Thailand houseboat takes final anchorage outside Sangkhlaburi, a small town on the northern shores of Khao Laem Reservoir. The day's excursion takes you into the city where you visit Wat Wang Wiwekaram and Chedi Buddhakhaya, two religious landmarks in the local community. The population of Sangkhlaburi is a colorful blend of ethnic identities including Thai, Burmese, Mon, Karen and even some Lao. You move on to another symbolic and literal link between the local cultures: Saphan Mon - Thailand's longest wooden bridge at 850 meters. Built in 1987, the bridge links the Thai district of Sangkhlaburi with the Mon community of Ban Wangka. Finally, you head into the jungle. On the back of an elephant, you negotiate the local rainforest. After a quick field lunch, the adventure continues as you steer a make-shift bamboo raft down-stream.
Day 4 After an early breakfast, you leave the Lake Safari Thailand houseboat to visit the Three Pagodas Pass on the border between Thailand and Burma. The crossing gained significance in the past as a military invasion route and the point where the River Kwai Death Railway connected Thailand and Burma. From here, you start the ride back to Bangkok retracing the events of the last few days as you pass by the temples of Sangkhlaburi, the mountains and endless jungles of Khao Laem National Park, as well as the lingering history of Kanchanaburi.
