Prepare Mexican fare from scratch during this 3-hour cooking class in San Juan Market, one of Mexico City’s most popular markets. With a professional chef guiding you from the start, learn about the labyrinthian market and pick up ingredients for your lesson. In a small group of no more than six people, you’ll receive highly personalized cooking instruction in a market-stall kitchen. After you whip up dishes like Baja-style fish, sweet tamales, tasty salsa and a mean mezcal cocktail, you'll leave with culinary chops to impress family and friends back home.

產品詳情

Meet your professional chef at San Juan Market located in Mexico City’s historic downtown. Your chef kicks off your 3-hour morning tour with an introduction to the market more than 150 years old. Learn about how the market started with goods spread about on the ground and has developed into the city’s go-to place where chefs and foodies alike can find exotic ingredients, imported products and gourmet fare.

Follow your chef into the maze of stalls and find rows of crates stacked on top of one another, laden with fish, colorful produce and cheese, as well as delicacies like crocodile, wild boar and quail. Along the way, you’ll pick up some ingredients for your cooking class.

Then head to a kitchen inside the market to begin your hands-on culinary adventure. Your chef teaches you about the traditions of preparing Mexican cuisine, designated a UNESCO World Heritage since 2010. Under attentive instruction, you’ll learn how to make authentic, delicious food from scratch.

Play around with rice flour and eggs as you prepare tamales canarios, (sweet-tasting canary-yellow tamales) and tortillas. Cook fish the way that locals from Baja California Sur serve it up, whip a true Mexican salsa and splash together your own mezcal cocktail. (Vegetarian menus can be accommodated.)

Your lesson concludes with you enjoying the fruits of your labor, washing it down with your smoky-flavored drink.

I chose this class with this part included: With a professional chef guiding you from the start, learn about the labyrinthian market and pick up ingredients for your lesson but there was no shopping for ingredients and I was really looking forward to getting to know the market. The chef, per my request, took me on a separate tour afterward. Viator did not respond to my queries via email before the trip. I had to make a call instead as the trip got closer. I got a cryptic message with the wrong dates on it from someone on my voucher which led to more questions. My main question was how to find the starting point which was never answered in either my email questions or my phone call. As a result it was very difficult to find the stall as nobody spoke English. Finally after asking several stall owners, one person recognized the name of the establishment and led me there. VIATOR NEEDED TO PROVIDE A MAP. Communication was terrible from Viator. However, the chef, did his best to teach me about Mexican cooking. We made tortillas and I learned a lot from him. Shopping for the ingredients in the market first would have made for a much more fulfilling experience. As it was, I felt a little like kitchen help during the lesson. I will say that the shrimp tacos were delicious and creative and the chef accomodated my Gluten Free dietary requirement.

I love going to real markets for the sights and smells. The class was small, just my friend and I, so we received a lot of attention and advice. The instructor was very engaging. We made tamales, a signature drink, fresh fish tacos that were similar to a tempura style, salsa and tacos. A great experience !!! One recommendation is that a list of recipes be provided at the end of the class so the lessons learned can be replicated.
