Escape the city and get picked up from your Penang hotel to drive 50 minutes west to the rural town of Balik Pulau. Meet your hosts Eric and Nazlina and enjoy a tour of a local sustainable living farm, where you will walk through Eric's beautiful fruit orchard and spice gardens. As you explore the grounds you will see how nutmeg, ginger flower, lemongrass, cloves and wild bananas grow. Stop during the tour to sample fresh nutmeg syrup and jam, or forage for herbs and vegetables.

Nazlina will then take you to Eric's kitchen in a traditional Malay house and teach you to prepare kerabu kacang botol ("four-angle salad"), one of her signature dishes, made with four-angle beans foraged from the vines on the farm. You will also learn to cook and enjoy traditional Malay dishes such as assam laksa, beef rendang, nasi lemak and sambal, the traditional Malay dipping sauce.

Please note that this is a rural, outdoor experience that includes some hiking so please bring bug spray and wear long pants and comfortable footwear. While on the farm you will drink spring water which has been collected direct from the source on the farm. The spring water has been boiled to ensure safety.
