In the summer, Kyoto locals escape the city heat for a relaxing dinner show at the Takao Momiji-ya restaurant on the Kiyotaki River. Join them on the restaurant's elevated outdoor terrace, known as a ‘kawadoko,’ and watch maiko (similar to geishas) perform songs and dance throughout your meal. This 100-minute dining experience is a must for travelers who want a taste of Japan's cultural traditions, and one that only runs between June and September.

In the evening, you are picked up from the New Miyako Hotel and taken via shared transport to the Takao Momijiya restaurant, located on the outskirts of Kyoto.
Upon arrival, take a seat on the covered terrace and bask in the cool breezes as they purl off Kiyotaki River, one of Kyoto’s crystal-clear waterways. You might even spot fireflies twinkling around this natural habitat.
During the 90-minute multicourse meal of Kyoto's seasonal delicacies, you get the pleasure of watching apprentice geisha (known as a maiko) perform traditional dances and music. Afterward, you get the chance to chat with them and take photos before you are driven back to the New Miyako Hotel in Kyoto.

Food was interesting, but not at all inviting. The Maiko's were all right, but seemed to have no personality.

We had an amazing time and loved meeting the Maiko. The only problem I had was with our host, who circled our table and reprimanded my teenage son for not eating the food and reprimanded me for needing to educate him. It was really embarrassing, as the people around us were staring at us and this woman was challenging me, asking me what I feed my son at home and then shaming me because I answered hamburgers and macaroni and cheese. I had given my son permission to taste all the foods, not shovel it into his mouth. One bite was enough for me but this woman was all over us and it was awful. At first I angrily wished to give the rating one star because it ruined my dinner to be spoken to this way for at least 20-30 minutes but the dinner was wonderful in many other ways. It was a very expensive dinner and not appreciated. But we loved the Maikos. They were so sweet and beautiful. We were so charmed! We would love to come back again one day.
