Vincent van Gogh is one of the most celebrated painters in history. His paintings sell for tens of millions of dollars on the international market. There’s a museum in Amsterdam devoted to him. But there are other places to visit to learn about van Gogh. Start your journey of discovery with hotel pickup and settle in with your private guide for the 90-minute trip to Zundert, van Gogh’s birthplace.

Visit the house where van Gogh was born, today a museum called the Vincent van GoghHuis that’s dedicated to his life. It’s not a classical museum but an active world of experiences for both art lovers and tourists. You can imagine you are in the van Gogh family’s living room with them. Meet his brother Theo, his mother, his father and his Uncle ‘Cent,’ the art dealer, through intriguing and nicely executed exhibitions.

Then travel to the town of Nuenen, about 50 miles (80 km) away. Go straight to the Vincentre, a complex dedicated to the painter that includes a permanent exhibit, outdoor walks and intriguing information about his life. Van Gogh lived in Nuenen from December 1863 to November 1865, and he was very active in practicing his craft here. In fact, he produced many character studies of peasants and workers in Nuenen, which resulted in The Potato Eaters, the painting many experts call his first masterpiece.

After a break for lunch (own expense), tour Nuenen, seeing locations where van Gogh painted and drew, including the spot that was once the farm where the family in The Potato Eaters lived. After you have seen Nuenen, relax on the ride back to Amsterdam, ending with convenient drop-off at your hotel.
