Just off the ancient Roman road called the Appian Way sits a town perched on the coastline. Named for the Latin word for ‘grotto,’ Sperlonga attracts people from far and wide with its grottoes and old Roman ruins that sit just outside of town. But the main attraction is its pristine beach, which has won awards for its cleanliness and the purity of its waters.

Meet your driver in the early morning for the 2-hour ride south to Sperlonga. Learn about the town’s long and intriguing history from the friendly tour leader during the drive. At a reserved, hand-picked spot on the beach, put your feet in the sand and kick back on a comfortable lounge chair underneath a big umbrella. Enjoy a cool beverage from the beachside bar if you wish (own expense).

The Sperlonga trip is excellent for the independent traveler. When you’re ready, stroll narrow lanes flanked by whitewashed houses and settle in at a simple trattoria for a lunch of fresh seafood (own expense). Upgrade to take a 1.5-hour boat cruise to swim in the pristine waters and check out grottoes and Roman ruins. And if you feel like cleaning up before heading back to Rome, the beach offers facilities like showers.

I would recommend visiting Sperlonga but do it on your own. There was another tour on the same bus as ours so we had to drop them off first and at the end pick them up on our way back. We waited on the bus after the long drive to them for 45 minutes since their boat hadn't returned. Bad organization

This review is not actually for Sperlonga Beach. We were scheduled for this tour, and received a call from the tour guide that the tour was cancelled, but that we could substitute Sponga Island instead. We went forward with Sponga Island, and found it to be amazing. Kimberly, the tour guide, did a fantastic job of ensuring everyone had a great time and making the complete experience as enjoyable as possible. The Island is breathtaking, and this tour is a must if you have time on your schedule.

Sperlonga is a quaint, clean and beautiful beach town. We had an incredible day soaking up the sun, playing in the water, enjoying a tasty lunch and walking around the town of Sperlonga. Our tour guide, Patrice, was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We greatly appreciated her translation assistance and all she did to make our day perfect. I highly recommend this tour.

The best day of my 10 day trip to Rome. Outstanding. The trip went flawless. The guide was excellent and the beach was beautiful and was not crowded and was very clean. The boat trip was fantastic!! Glad i didn't miss that! Swimming in the Mediterrain was a plus!! Thank you to Beth for such a pleasant day trip!!

I highly recommend this tour. Our guide, Kimberley, was so helpful. I am a bit disabled and she carried my suitcase down the very long stairway to the beach. She also went and bought Dramamine at my request as a precaution for our boat ride. The town, beach and water are all very clean and beautiful. If you need to escape Rome and its heat, you will not go wrong with this tour. Also we had a wonderful meal at the restaurant by the marina. I think it would be very difficult to try to do this trip on your own unless you can rent a car.
