Meet your guide in one of the many bars of the city for an optional breakfast with Cappuccino or Espresso coffee and a delicious local pastry, discussing about this Italian morning ritual. Continue your morning visiting the characteristic street Via Madonna, located in the heart of Livorno and symbol of the multicultural origins of this unique city. With the remains of the old Armenian and the Greek United Church, the Church of the Madonna and its four altars dedicated to the French, Corsican, Portuguese and Dutch Nations, the street is an important testimony of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence among communities. Then go on to the covered historic Food Market, where you will discover the authentic local food products and get a taste of Livornese life.
Passing through the lively outdoor Fruit and Vegetable Market follow the inviting smell of the frati, typical handmade sweet fritters, and other fried street food called scagliozzi (fried polenta). Livorno’s Mercato Centrale (Mercato delle Vettovaglie) is an amazing liberty style building designed in the 19th century, located along the navigable Fosso Reale (Royal Canal). Accompanied by your guide, here you will discover the local culture through gastronomy. Enjoy the happy chaos of the vendors and lose yourself in the overwhelming sights and smells of this beautiful place. You will find also numerous Jewish products which are testimony to Livorno's large Jewish population, who, like other religions, have settled in the city.
After the Market Tour, end your morning with a local street food tasting (inlcuded). Your guide will accompany you in a typicalTorteria where you will enjoy a local speciality known as Torta di Ceci, a kind of pancake made from chick peas and traditionally served in bread with a glass of Spuma (the curious name referring to the original value, 5 cents, of cake and bread).
