Meet your guide in central Marseille and hop aboard your minivan to begin your tour. With centuries of history and heritage to offer, as well as spectacular views along the Mediterranean coast, Marseille is widely regarded among the finest cities in France.
First, head out of the city to Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde, known locally as ‘la bonne m□re’ (the good mother). Follow your guide on a tour through the church and crypt, and gain insight into its Neo-Byzantine heritage. Afterward, soak up panoramic views out over Marseille and the Frioul archipelago beyond from your vantage point high on the hill.
Next, return to your minivan and continue on to the Abbey of Saint Victor ─ a medieval fortress and tower complex with roots stretching as far back as the 5th century. Explore the abbey’s crypt (own expense) ─ home to one of Provence’s most important Christian museums ─ and marvel at the marble sarcophagus and tombs you find there.
Then, journey to the Cath□drale de la Major ─ considered by many to be the finest of its kind in France ─ and marvel at its ornate interior before setting off on foot to discover Marseille Old Town. With your guide leading the way, wander along cobblestone walkways past tall, narrow houses to ancient courtyards and soak up the atmosphere in this delightful corner of the city.
After your Old Town walking tour, enjoy free time to explore Marseille’s famous Fort Saint-Jean at your leisure. Home to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations and an attractive Mediterranean garden, the fort was built in the late 17th century by King Louis XIV of France to protect Marseille from attack.
After four hours exploring the sites of Marseille, head back to the charming Old Port with your guide where your panorama tour concludes.
