When your cruise docks at the Cannes port, meet your guide, board a minivan and drive along the Mediterranean coast to Nice. Artists have been drawn to the azure-blue seas, sunny skies and vibrant colors of the French Riviera for centuries, and Nice has found itself the center of attention. Museums and art galleries abound, and here you'll find some of the best places to discover the works of famous painters.
Head to Nice's leafy Cimiez district for your first gallery visit, the Chagall Museum, devoted to the works of Modernist Marc Chagall, a master of Expressionism, Symbolism and Cubism. Pick up an audio guide and explore the gallery at your leisure. Don't miss his famous collection of biblical paintings.
Your next stop is the Matisse Museum, housed in a 17th-century Genoese villa. This French painter found short-lived notoriety in Fauvism, but grew to become one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, especially in the genre of plastic arts. Let your eyes roam over the vibrant colors and vivid forms of the many masterpieces held here, and make sure to admire impressive pieces such as Temp□te □ Nice and la Serpentine.
Next, wind along the breathtaking Middle Corniche road to the peninsula town of St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to visit Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, an ornate Italian style mansion occupying 17 acres (7 hectares) of manicured gardens. It was once the home of B□atrice Ephrussi, a member of the Rothschild family, and today houses her remarkable collection of sculptures, antique furniture, rare porcelain and classic paintings. Wander the luxury apartments, stroll the gardens and gaze out over the magnificent Mediterranean from your hillside vantage point.
At the end of your time here, relax on the drive back to the Cannes cruise port.
