Day 1: Yosemite Valley
Meet your guide in the afternoon in Yosemite National Park’s Curry Village, which provides soaring views of Half Dome from the valley floor. Get acquainted with your small group and the provided gear, including your backpack, as you learn about backcountry survival skills and principles such as leave-no-trace ethics.
Take in a few Yosemite highlights before purchasing dinner at the Curry Village pizza deck or cafeteria (own expense) and then camping under the trees.
Overnight: Yosemite Valley backpackers’ campground
Day 2: Yosemite Valley Glacier Point Little Yosemite Valley (L, D)
Today’s approximate 6.8-mile (11-km) hike from Glacier Point takes you down to llilouette Creek, past llilouette Fall, and over the top of Nevada Fall via the Panorama Trail into Little Yosemite Valley.
After grabbing some snacks for breakfast at the Curry Village coffee shop (own expense), hop on the morning shuttle for a 1.5-hour drive to Glacier Point, and listen to onboard narration about Yosemite National Park on the way. Enjoy plenty of photo ops of prominent natural landmarks such as Half Dome, Cloud’s Rest, Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall from this prime viewpoint.
Follow your knowledgeable guide on foot for the first 1.5 miles (2.4 km) as you descend 800 vertical feet (244 meters) in elevation to the top of 370-foot (113-meter) Illilouette Fall. Here, take a break to refuel and catch your breath before continuing the next 1 to 1.5 miles (1.6 to 2.4 km) up a moderately strenuous section of switchbacks that ascend about 300 vertical feet (91 meters).
Once the switchbacks are conquered, the trail flattens out for an easy and scenic 1 to 1.5 miles to the next junction — the Panorama Trail. Running along this eastern point in the valley, the Panorama Trail offers postcard-worthy views that live up to its name. The following mile — a strenuous downhill series of 20 or so switchbacks — drops you 700 feet (213 meters) in elevation to the outflow of Nevada Fall.
After a lunch break atop the 594-foot (181-meter) waterfall, continue onward along the John Muir Trail as you follow the Merced River upstream. It's a short 1-mile hike that begins with about eight uphill switchbacks before you're dropped back down to the river with an easy and shaded walk to Little Yosemite ValleyCampground, where you'll have a camp dinner and spend the night.
Alternatively (depending on the availability of permits), you may use a trail that takes your small group 4 miles (6.4 km) down into the Illilouette Valley, where you can camp alongside Illilouette Creek.
Overnight: Little Yosemite Valley Campground or IIlilouette Creek campsite
Day 3: Little Yosemite Valley Half Dome Little Yosemite Valley (B, L, D)
After breakfast, leave your backpack behind for a 7-mile (11.3-km)round-trip hike to the top of Half Dome, Yosemite’s crown jewel.
For the first 3.5 miles (5.6 km) the trail climbs nearly 2,700 feet (823 meters), starting with switchbacks out of Little Yosemite Valley that wind through a mix of pine and fir trees. After about 1.5 miles, you'll take a break at the final junction before hiking strenuous uphill switchbacks to reach the shoulder of Half Dome.
Rest here and soak up the views of Vernal and Nevada falls, Liberty Cap and the sheer face of the granite monument, which rises nearly 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) above Yosemite Valley at an elevation of 8,836 feet (2,693 meters) above sea level.
At the base of the subdome, a ranger checks your permit before you ascend the granite staircase to the start of the cable system, erected in 1919 to assist climbers to the summit. If you're feeling adventurous, you can climb the final 425 vertical feet (129 meters) using the half-inch steel cable handrail — a guaranteed adrenaline rush.
Once atop Half Dome, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, El Capitan, Clouds Rest, Tenaya Canyon and the Yosemite high country. After celebrating your accomplishment, return with your guide to Little Yosemite Valley and spend time along the beach near the Merced Riverbefore camping one last night.
Alternatively, if you’ve stayed overnight in Illilouette Valley, your small group will hike 5.5 miles (8.8 km) around Panorama Cliff, across Nevada Fall and into Little Yosemite Valley to summit Half Dome either this afternoon or the following morning, depending on the pacing of the day.
Overnight: Little Yosemite Valley Campground
Day 4: Little Yosemite Valley Mist Trail Yosemite Valley (B, L)
Fuel up with a camp breakfast before hiking out, descending approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 km) back to Yosemite Valley. Once again, follow the Merced River for a mile before descending along the Mist Trail. When you reach the top of Nevada Fall, follow your guide down the steep route that winds alongside two roaring waterfalls.
Walk down switchbacks next to the 594-foot (181-meter) Nevada Fall, and then take a break at the site of an old hotel before crossing the Silver Apron Bridge and descending to the Emerald Pool and the precipice of the 317-foot (96-meter) Vernal Fall. After a photo stop, continue down the granite staircase along the side of Vernal Fall.Depending on how much water is flowing, you may be sprayed by the mist as you walk down the slippery steps.
When you reach the base, cross a footbridge over the scenic Merced River for more photo ops of the cascade. Then walk the final half-mile to reach the valley floor by late afternoon, when your camping tour ends and you can say farewell to your guide.
